At last, on the third attempt, Hull KR became the Champions when they beat full-time favourites Castleford Tigers, recently demoted from the Superleague, to take the Northern Rail Cup in a thrilling final at Bloomfield Road, Blackpool.

Blackpool's Bloomfield Road may not have been the fans idea of a perfect venue but the 9,400 sell-out crowd it one to savour.

The Tigers were in the lead after just five minutes when Craig Huby converted a penalty following interference by Rovers. The score was soon leveled with a penalty against Cas' swooped on by Gareth Morton.

Referee Ben Thaler used the video referee as Rovers planted disalowed 'possibles' over the line, one of which is still 'under-consideration' by many a puzzled player, coach and fan.

Rovers dropped back as Castleford's Michael Platt scored under the posts from Paul Handforth's in the dying moments of the first half. Craig Huby converted and a last minute penalty to give the Tigers an 8 point lead at half time.

Jason Netherton couldn't hang on to the ball as he streched for the line soon after the restart and the video referee had to make the decision as Andy Raleigh crossed the try line.

Byron Ford intercepted a long pass from Brad Davis raced the length of the field to score under the posts.

Jon Hepworth crossed the line for a converted try in the 74th minute, but this was Rovers' day and as the red and whites held on to the Final whistle.
